Student Opportunities

The Wardliparingga Research Unit at SAHMRI is the primary point of contact for potential students interested in pursuing a career in Aboriginal Health Research. Led by Professor Alex Brown, the group is made up of over 50 senior research fellows, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, administrative staff and current masters and PhD students, 28 of whom are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.

We have extensive connections with all university partners across the state, and have current students enrolled at each of Adelaide, UniSA and Flinders Universities. Our group has a range of skills and expertise, including public health medicine, clinical epidemiology, health services research, social science, evaluation, bioethics, knowledge synthesis and exchange, and policy development. We have strong links with all themes across SAHMRI and can support a wide range of shared student projects.

We are particularly interested in growing our clinical trial activities, including pharmacological, non-pharmacological and complex interventions in Aboriginal communities, health services and individuals. Whilst we have a strong commitment to supporting the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers, we welcome interest from other students wishing to make a contribution to Aboriginal health, particularly those who will operate under the standards set forward in the  South Australian Aboriginal Health Accord.

We have flexible options for the best students to contribute to our chronic disease and health systems research, including work in diabetes/cardiometabolic disease, cardiovascular conditions including stroke, coronary and rheumatic heart diseases, men’s health, inequalities in health, population health, clinical trials, epidemiology, primary care research and the role and impact of psychosocial factors in health and illness. We will be in a position to offer the best students top up scholarships and mentorship through other funding opportunities in Aboriginal health.

The SAHMRI community acknowledges and respects the traditional owners, the family clans who are the Kaurna Nation from the Adelaide Plains region of South Australia. We acknowledge the clans of the Kaurna Nation and the sacred knowledge they hold for their country. We pay our respects to the Kaurna Nation, their ancestors and the descendants of these living family clans today.
