The Cryogenic facility on level 0 is managed as a central service for researchers. The facility currently houses five 94k vapour-phase cryogenic freezers and has the capacity for approximately half a million samples. The cryogenic facility can be used for storage of cell lines, tissues, and patient specimens etc.
The tanks auto-fill and are connected to our BMS monitoring system which alerts the relevant person in the event of an alarm. Retrieval and submission of samples is currently enabled through SAHMRI’s FreezerMax database. Researchers use this platform to request samples to be stored or retrieved which is then actioned by the Research Support Technicians.
In addition to the long term storage of samples, researchers have autonomous access to dry ice (in the form of snow), a controlled rate freezer (available for booking via the PPMS equipment booking system) and liquid nitrogen for filling of small dewars and dry shippers. Researchers must be trained in the correct use of these amenities before accessing the area.
